Did you know that “every time your brain has a thought, it releases chemicals? Every time you have a sad, hopeless, mad, cranky, unkind, judgmental, or helpfulness thought, your brain immediately releases chemicals that make your body feel awful. Amen’s work, is that he explains why eliminating negative thoughts is so important. Andrew Huberman’s work to see what he says about self-regulation. Daniel Amen (who I’ve talked a lot about on this podcast with his idea of controlling our ANTS, or automatic negative thoughts) and will look at Dr. I’m probably going to reflect back to his work, or anyone else who can explain how to implement the concepts I’m trying to reinforce on this podcast, or anyone who can help me to explain the details of science in a way that we can all understand and apply it. Andrew Huberman would say about self-regulation. You can go back this episode if you want to review these tips by clicking on the link in the show notes, but for today’s episode, almost 3 years later, I wonder, “how good am I at self-regulation” and have I improved this skill at all over the years? Since this is a how-to podcast, where I want to provide tips for us all to use and implement immediately, backed by the most current neuroscience research, I thought I would check in with what Stanford Professor and Neuroscientist Dr. On EPISODE #111, I gave some examples of how we could teach self-regulation to our children and students, and even gave some thoughts on why it’s an important skill to master in the workplace. It includes being able to resist highly emotional reactions to upsetting stimuli, to calm yourself down when you get upset, adjust to a change in expectations and (the ability) to handle frustration” In other words, it’s the ability to bounce back after a setback or disappointment, and the ability to stay in congruence with your inner value system. Self-regulation is “the ability to manage your emotions and behavior in accordance with the demands of the situation. What is Self-Regulation and Why is it So Important to Be Able to Manage Those Negative Thoughts, Our Emotions and Even Our Behavior? It’s these 6 pillars that I saw as the foundation for us to build upon, and improve and is the heart of The Neuroscience Meets SEL Podcast. This skill of managing our thoughts, emotions and behavior comes under the competency of self-regulation (one of the 6 social and emotional learning competencies that we covered in the beginning episodes of this podcast, to set the foundation for what I envisioned with the content we would be covering here. I brought up the damaging effects of Automatic Negative Thinking on one of our early episodes, #14 on Self-Regulation. Inform students (and ourselves) that inner speech can build them up or destroy them.” (Horacio Sanchez) Horacio Sanchez said, “Did you know that when we engage in inner speech, all the mechanisms of outer speech and the auditory process activate in the brain? Therefore, what we say to ourselves is just like hearing it said by someone else to us. Today’s EPISODE #273, we are going back to our second Brain Fact Friday, EPISODE #112, released in March of 2021 on “Training Your Brain to Self-Regulate Automatic Negative Thoughts and Emotions” where we looked at our recent interview with my good friend Horacio Sanchez, from EPISODE #111 on “Finding Solutions to the Poverty Problem.” My hopes are that this step backwards will help us to become better prepared to move forward, towards our goals, or whatever it is that we are working on this year, with this strong foundation in place. Why are we going back to the basics? When we are building something worthwhile, something that we want to last, going back to the foundations will help us to strengthen our understanding of our brain, and our mind, to our results, providing us with the extra strength we will need to overcome the obstacles and challenges that will come our way. This season (Season 9) we will be focused on Neuroscience: Going Back to the Basics as we revisit our past Brain Fact Fridays, narrowing in on how anything new from the field of neuroscience can be tied to improving our productivity, our results, our mental and physical health. For returning guests, welcome back, and for those who are new listeners, I’m Andrea Samadi and launched this podcast almost 4 years ago, to share how important an understanding of our brain is for our everyday life and results. Welcome back to The Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast where we bridge the gap between theory and practice, with strategies, tools and ideas we can all use immediately, applied to the most current brain research to heighten productivity in our schools, sports environments and modern workplaces.

At its peak member count, the group had a little over 500 members. Members of the group discussed the language with one another in English, Toki Pona, and Esperanto, proposed changes, and talked about the resources on the site. Early activity took place in a Yahoo! group. In the same year, an early version of the language was published online, and it quickly gained popularity. In 2001, Lang was experiencing depression and started working on Toki Pona as a way to simplify her thoughts. She later said that Esperanto was the inspiration for her creation of constructed languages. During and after her high school years, she became fluent in five languages, including Esperanto. Born in 1978 in Moncton, New Brunswick, Lang grew up in a bilingual family her mother spoke French, and her father spoke English. Toki Pona was developed by the Canadian linguist and translator Sonja Lang (formerly Sonja Elen Kisa). Īlthough it was not intended as an international auxiliary language, a worldwide online community uses it for communication. According to its author, it is meant to be "fun and cute". Īnother aim of the language is for the speakers to become aware of the present moment and pay more attention to the surroundings and the words people use. On the basis of the Sapir–Whorf hypothesis, which states that a language influences the way its speakers think and behave, Toki Pona was designed to induce positive thinking. This allows the users to see the fundamental nature and effect of the ideas expressed. From these simple notions, more complex ideas can be built up by simple combining. Partly inspired by Taoist philosophy, another goal of Toki Pona is to help its speakers focus on the essentials by reducing complex concepts to basic elements. It has a minimal vocabulary and 14 phonemes devised to be easy to pronounce for speakers of various language backgrounds. Like a pidgin, it focuses on simple concepts and elements that are near-universal among cultures. It is designed to express maximal meaning with minimal complexity. One of the language's main goals is a focus on minimalism. The name toki pona therefore means both 'good language' and 'simple language', emphasizing that the language encourages speakers to find joy in simplicity. The name of the language has two parts – toki ('language'), derived from Tok Pisin tok, which itself comes from English talk and pona ('good/simple'), from Esperanto bona, from Latin bonus. While activity mainly takes place online in chat rooms, on social media, and in other online groups, there have been a few organized in-person meetings. Despite the small vocabulary, speakers can understand and communicate, mainly relying on context, combinations of words, and expository sentences to express more specific meanings.Īfter its initial creation, a small community of speakers developed in the early 2000s. Partly inspired by Taoist philosophy, the language is designed to help users concentrate on basic things and to promote positive thinking, in accordance with the Sapir–Whorf hypothesis. However, it was not created as an international auxiliary language. Its words are easy to pronounce across language backgrounds, which allows it to serve as a bridge of sorts for people of different cultures. In Toki Pona: The Language of Good, Lang presents around 120 words (referred to as pu), while the later Toki Pona Dictionary lists 137 "essential" words and a number of less-used ones (referred to as ku). It focuses on simple, near-universal concepts to maximize expression from very few words. Toki Pona is an isolating language with only 14 phonemes and an underlying feature of minimalism. Lang also released a supplementary dictionary, the Toki Pona Dictionary, in July 2021, describing the language as used by its community of speakers. The first drafts were published online in 2001, while the complete form was published in the 2014 book Toki Pona: The Language of Good. It was created by Sonja Lang ( née Elen Kisa ) a Canadian linguist and translator, to simplify her thoughts and communication. Toki Pona (rendered as toki pona and often translated as 'the language of good' IPA: ( listen ⓘ) English: / ˈ t oʊ k i ˈ p oʊ n ə/) is a philosophical artistic constructed language known for its small vocabulary, simplicity, and ease of acquisition. As a new user, I probably wouldn’t know what to search for, and join the ranks of people who have seemingly preferred the new design. I had to go to the website and download Pandemic. It only comes with white and dark “Bliss”. I did not find the classic Pandemic skin “included” in the package. There doesn’t seem to be anything I can configure to change that, because the data is manipulated as Album Artist internally. Composers are also listed with semicolon and no space.ĪIMP will read in Ensemble tags from my FLAC files of classical music as if they were another value of Album Artist, which is inconsistent with the literal meaning of that field, and my usage of it to record the Orchestra. AIMP will spit out a fugly string of “Bryan Adams Rod Stewart Sting” instead of using spaces, commas and ampersands where appropriate (as can be done with $meta_sep(), preferably with different color to indicate that the comma is not part of the artist’s proper name. The implementation in AIMP is still rudimentary. This is a standard feature of Ape and Vorbis formats, and has worked in Foobar since the beginning. I am pleased to see that *finally* multiple values per tag field are supported, which I asked for in the forums last year. It is not possible to use any semi-standard fields not recognized by the developer (such as the date of reissue/remaster or the media type). AIMP is obviously not capable to be a tagger and replace either Foobar or Mp3tag. The functionality for managing metadata has been and still is weak and *rigid*. I’ve actually enjoyed exploring the convoluted Settings dialogs, various layout options, and looking at the simple VU meters, while encountering fewer cosmetic glitches compared to other software. Until now the strength of AIMP has been pleasant visual design. You may install the version anew, upgrade an existing version of AIMP or install it as a portable version instead. It supports the aften.exe command line encoder for AC3 formats now, multi tag values for APEv2, ID3v2, Vorbis Commens and M4A tags, and an option to limit the connection attempts when connecting to Internet radio stations when the connection is lost.ĭownloads of AIMP 4 Beta 1 are provided on the official project website. The developers have added new functionality to the player as well. You may hide local files with the shortcut Ctrl-M. If you don't use that feature, you end up with lots of wasted space in the interface especially since it is not possible currently to hide local files in AIMP 4. Music you play, and to a degree played, takes up about one third of the width of the interface while the remaining width is reserved for local files that you have added to AIMP. It may feel strange at first that the actual music that you are playing is listed on the right side of the interface and not front and center. It is accessible right from the main window. The library that you used previously remains available after upgrading from version 3.x to AIMP 4. What you may notice right away is that the music library has been integrated into the main application whereas it was loaded as a separate window in previous versions. It features main playback controls at the top, and below that access to local files, playlists and other functionality. The dimensions of the main application window have been expanded. The developers of the music player are working on the current stable version of the client and the next major version of it at the same time.ĪIMP 4, currently available as a first beta release, ships with a new user interface that moves it away from looking like another Winamp clone on first sight. In the below example, we are demonstrating the usage of the Android fragment.
The frogs can accidentally swallow some of these items and die.) NEVER use cedar or pine shavings, gravel, or sand in your tank. If the bark is too small, they could accidentally swallow it and then die of indigestion. White's often pick up a piece of bark when they're eating. The arboreal tank is normally two feet high hexagon or pentagon shaped, and has a small base area. The arboreal tank is the best choice because tree frogs spend most of their time high in the branches in their tank. There are two choices in tanks for the White's Tree Frog the arboreal tank, or the terrestrial tank. Like all tweens, these kids have a touch of the hardcore misanthropic about them they show up to watch horror films and teach Chucky stabbing moves, and Chucky, like a YouTube algorithm gone haywire, rapidly proceeds to take those to the extreme. These people only exist to feed the growing bloodlust of Andy’s Buddi doll, who renames himself “Chucky” and quickly gains a fixation with death, thanks to Andy and his new, Goonies-esque group of friends. But apart from a single implied glimpse of Andy’s dad and a once-happy family now broken up because of Reasons, we have no idea who these people are or what they’re doing in this musty apartment building, overseen by the world’s creepiest maintenance guy, or why Karen is now dating an equally one-dimensional jerk named Shane.īut none of this actually matters. So far, this is all in line with the original Child’s Play film. The doll (voiced by Hamill) winds up going home with Karen (Aubrey Plaza), a nebulous mom archetype who’s moved with her son, Andy (Gabriel Bateman), to a nebulous new town for a nebulous new start. Which is why the movie promptly kicks off with a disgruntled sweatshop employee expertly recoding a Buddi doll to remove its “violence inhibitors” and fill the world with a little more sociopathic mayhem. If this sounds distinctly Black Mirror-esque, don’t be misled the new Child’s Play is mainly just here to have fun, not here to make you think. But where he once was an innocent receptacle for the soul of an evil serial killer, now Chucky’s a new smart-home appliance, called the “Buddi” system, designed to unite the best qualities of Alexa and Siri with a walking, talking doll companion for the whole family. He’s still an explicit callback to the “My Buddy” dolls of the ’80s, complete with cheesy overalls and a creepily chipper theme song. The new Child’s Play changes the backstory of Chucky, the evil doll of yore. Vox-mark vox-mark vox-mark vox-mark vox-mark The new Child’s Play is downright Goonies-esque. But it’s also fun and funny, and if what you came for is a silly movie where dolls kill people, then, hey! You’re in luck! The new Child’s Play often feels like it came straight from the minds of tweens: It’s silly, even nigh nonsensical, full of flat stock characters, plot non sequiturs, and a hand-wave-y take on technological dystopia that never manages to get above eye roll levels of sincerity. But for the rest of us, there’s still the fun of watching a maniacal piece of plastic running around wreaking havoc and carving up bodies. It’s a remake of the original 1988 film, jettisoning the many sequels, retconning the backstory of Chucky the killer doll, and swapping out Chucky’s longtime voice actor Brad Dourif for Mark Hamill.Ĭlearly, this movie won’t be for every die-hard Chucky fan. Protective fans are also rejecting 2019’s Child’s Play on its existence alone. Those include the horror film franchise’s creator, who declined to be involved with the new production, as well as the many existing fans who have circulated hashtags like # NotM圜hucky in the wake of the complicated backstage drama surrounding the new movie. The new Child’s Play reboot has amassed its share of critics, even well before its official June 21 release date. Two years ago, Matthew Mancuso was sentenced to 15 years on federal pornography charges. Sergeant Zaglifa says that to gain proper perspective on the severity of child pornography, it's important to call them "child sex abuse images." "When those images are being made," says Sergeant Zaglifa, "that's sex abuse in progress." He offers his expert advice for how parents can protect their children: "The number one thing is: No chat rooms." Her rescue, says Sergeant Zaglifa, was an unexpected reward for what he calls the "physically and emotionally draining" work of capturing child predators. Working with other agents, he traced Mancuso's Internet address to a location near Pittsburgh, where he was later arrested.ĭuring their investigation, police officials had no way of knowing that the little girl in the photographs was Mancuso's adopted daughter. Sergeant Zaglifa says his instinct told him this man was an absolute danger to children. Posing as a pedophile, Chicago area police officer Mike Zaglifa discovered Mancuso in an online chat room. Back in the states, Masha expected a nice American home with a bedroom all her own. No phone calls were made to his ex-wife or to his biological daughter. What she didn't know was the adoption agency failed to properly check her new father's background. But nothing could have been farther from the truth. Mancuso seemed like her knight in shining armor. He visited Masha several times at the orphanage, took her to nice dinners, and bought her candy. After months of waiting, Mancuso traveled to Russia to meet his new daughter. He contacted a New Jersey adoption agency requesting information on 5-year-old Caucasian girls, and chose Masha from a videotape. Meanwhile, 41-year-old Matthew Mancuso, a divorced father in Pennsylvania, was looking for a little girl to adopt. Soon after recovering from her traumatic ordeal, Masha was sent to an orphanage where she prayed that a good family would come to rescue her. Her own mother tried to kill her when she was only 4 years old by stabbing her in the back of the neck with a kitchen knife. She was born in southern Russia to an alcoholic mother and a father she never knew. In an apparent suicide, the photographer was found dead with a plastic bag over his head on Novemin Paris, France. At 13 years old, Masha has already survived the unthinkable. In 2016, the photographer was accused of rape by four separate women who had served as former models. Similar to the work of Jock Sturges and Sally Mann, Hamilton’s erotic subject matter caused complaints of indecency over the decades. He published numerous photobooks during his life, The Age of Innocence (1995) being one of his most popular. In 1979, his film Laura was released in France-the movie blends melodrama with soft-core pornography, as wells as Hamilton’s hallmark soft focus. Born on Apin London, United Kingdom, the artist initially found work as an art director, then a commercial photographer in the 1950s and 60s in France. Using a photographic technique akin to painting, he has acknowledged the influence of Lucas Cranach on his style. Often controversial, the images evoke an effect of dreaminess through soft focus and varied grain. David Hamilton was a British photographer and film director known for his nude photographs of adolescent girls. |
